No doubt DeLonge and Barker would like this band’s perfs to be elevated above the juvenile nature of Blink-182 shows, but no one told the moshing youngsters in the pit, who even hollered when DeLonge announced the next song was inspired by Sept. He had to continuously remind the mostly teenaged crowd that these were “serious” songs, which, of course, drew screams from the hysterical girls. Some of front man DeLonge’s old habits are apparently hard to break. I hope they find comfort and relief in whatever way they can. I saw this field that grew perfection, full of things you do. “I saw this man dispose of hunger and soap operas too. He speaks of seeing all of the terrible things in the world vanquished and eventually awakes to the realisation that as a collective, we will achieve these things: The next verse goes on to describe what I feel are all the things Delonge hopes for in the world. “I held your hand and sat there knowing that we’d make it through” It’s one that suggests that no matter how much malice, heartbreak and disaster there is in this world, we can get through it as long as we have one another:

The lyric that spoke to me most vividly was the last line in the first verse.

I watched the fed and saw them panic as the fire grew.” “I watched the smoke as it grew darker and blew up through the roof. The first verse speaks of a terrible, tragic event: the imagery reflecting that of a bombing, which is initially what brought it to the forefront of my mind: The lyrics are careful, emotive and appear to highlight three stages of Delonge’s thoughts. It’s a song that outlines a terrible tragedy – often speculated to be about the 9/11 attacks. The song that came to mind when considering the awful state of Boston today was Watch The World by Box Car Racer – side band of Blink-182 members Travis Barker and Tom Delonge. I can’t begin to understand the grief and panic that many must be feeling in the city of Boston right now, but I hope that they find courage, solace and that their friends and families are returned safely to them. In the wake of the horrific events that took place in Boston, Massachusetts today, I found myself looking to music again to try and make sense of the terrible things that happen in this world. In times of terrible tragedy, people turn to many different things to deal with their grief: some to religion or faith, others to less traditional means.
